How to Act After an Earthquake

These guidelines follow the recommendations of Pacific Gas & Electric, the American Red Cross and the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services.


Step1
Stay calm and be prepared for aftershocks.


Step2
Check for injuries and administer first aid.


Step3
Listen on your portable radio for information and instructions.


Step4
Check your home for gas and water leaks, broken electrical wiring or sewage lines, and cracks and damage. If there is damage, turn the utility off at the source. Immediately report gas leaks to your utility company.


Step5
Check for downed power lines.


Step6
If you must evacuate, leave a message at home telling others where you can be found.

How to Acquire a Bodyguard

There are two reasons for hiring a bodyguard: You need protection or you want to look like someone who needs protection. If you're in the second group, simply locate a large guy with a suit, shades and one of those little ear radios. If you really need protection, read on.



Step1
Educate yourself about the range of available services. Bodyguards are more than big guys with guns. Top security professionals are likely to have specialized driving skills, weapons training, risk avoidance skills and medical training.


Step2
Look in the phone book or online for security services in your area. Verify that the companies are licensed to operate within your state and that they are committed to working within the law.

If you still feel unsafe, consider a new line of work--or new friends
